Ready-Mix vs Site-Mixed Concrete: Which Is Better for Your Project?

Every builder eventually faces the same question: mix the concrete on site, or order ready-mix concrete (RMC) from a plant? Both have their place. The right answer depends on the size of the pour, the quality you need and how much your time on site is worth.

What is site-mixed concrete?

Cement, sand, aggregate and water are measured on site, often by volume using pans, and mixed in a small drum mixer or by hand. It needs storage space for materials, labour to batch and mix, and close supervision to keep proportions consistent.

What is ready-mix concrete?

Ready-mix concrete is produced in a batching plant to a designed mix, with every material weighed by computer, and delivered in transit mixers that keep it agitated on the way. In India, its production and delivery are covered by IS 4926.

How they compare

  • Consistency: ready-mix is weigh-batched to a tested mix design. Site mixing by volume varies from batch to batch, especially in water content, which directly reduces strength.
  • Speed: one transit mixer carries several cubic metres, and with a concrete pump large slabs are poured in hours rather than days.
  • Labour: ready-mix removes the batching and mixing from site, leaving your crew free to place, compact and finish.
  • Wastage: no stockpiles of sand and aggregate to lose to rain or theft, and no leftover cement going stale.
  • Site space: ready-mix suits tight urban sites with no room for materials or a mixer.
  • Testing: a good supplier tests its materials and concrete and keeps records for each pour.

Site mixing can look cheaper per cubic metre, but once labour, wastage, supervision and the risk of weak concrete are counted, ready-mix is usually the more economical choice for anything beyond small jobs.

What ready-mix looks like at scale

Sri Ganesha Readymix Concreete runs 2 manufacturing units with a production capacity of 15,000 m³, a fleet of 36 transit mixers and a 60 km delivery radius. With Schwing boom pumps from S17 to S43 and stationary pumps from SP 1200 to SP 1800, we can place concrete at height or over long distances without slowing your schedule.

When site mixing still makes sense

For very small quantities, such as a short pathway or minor repairs, or for sites a transit mixer cannot reach at all, site mixing can be practical. For slabs, beams, columns, foundations and any structural work, ready-mix gives you more confidence in the result.
